City wants upscale senior housing

Upscale senior housing with as many as 140 units could be part of downtown Newhall's redevelopment, a Santa Clarita city official said Monday.

Talks are under way about a possible agreement between the city and Los Angeles-based Meta Housing Corporation dealing with the logistics and economics of such a project, said Paul Brotzman, director of community development for Santa Clarita.

"There are a number of things that have to be resolved," Brotzman said. But he said he was "cautiously optimistic that we have a project."

The three- to four-story housing complex would be located between Main Street and Railroad Avenue bordered by Fifth and Sixth streets.

The complex could include as many as 140 senior housing units, with 20 percent of them designated affordable housing.

Along with the housing, the project would create about 18,000 square feet of street-level retail space, as well as a 400-space parking structure for the project and downtown Newhall visitors.

The number of spaces would exceed the number of parking spaces needed for the project, which would help meet the growing need for parking in downtown Newhall, Brotzman said.

Modeled after the Burbank Senior Arts Colony, Newhall's upscale housing project would offer many programs and activities for senior citizens and would provide active retail space for the community, Brotzman said.

The project would also enhance the city's plans to landscape downtown Newhall.

Additionally, the possible 140 households would have access to nearby points of interest in the Newhall area, such as William S. Hart Park.

"It's a project that we have concluded (is) a beneficial project for downtown Newhall," Brotzman said.
