Marsha McLean: Come celebrate America’s pastime with friends

Baseball fans seemed very happy a few weeks ago at the recent news of Earvin “Magic” Johnson returning to the Los Angeles sports scene as part owner of the Dodgers. As the team kicks off its 50th anniversary with a new leader and an all-star roster of players, local residents are invited to enjoy one of the community’s most popular sports traditions: Santa Clarita Dodger Day.

Now in its 35th year, Santa Clarita Dodger Day will be held on Saturday, May 19, and will, once again, offer residents the opportunity to enjoy one of America’s most beloved pastimes and favorite sports teams at a fraction of the regular cost.

The 2012 Santa Clarita Dodger Day will feature major league baseball players, such as centerfielder Matt Kemp, battling it out against the St. Louis Cardinals. Game time is at 7:10 p.m., with pregame festivities, including a youth parade, set to begin at 7 p.m.

Residents can also catch a live performance of the “Red, White and Dodger Blue” national anthem from the winner of the national anthem auditions, which were held in March in anticipation of the annual Santa Clarita Dodger Day game. Although the champion has not been announced yet, past winners have ranged from local high school students to grandparents filled with pride for their community and love for the game.

SCV residents are huge baseball fans. Local baseball diamonds and fields are filled with community members of all ages throughout the year. The Santa Clarita Dodger Day event guarantees fun for the whole family, as well as a fantastic way to show support for local kids and the community.

In keeping with the tradition of previous Santa Clarita Dodger Day events, a portion of the proceeds from community members’ discounted ticket sales will hit home in the form of a rebate for local organizations.

These proceeds have helped raise more than $10,000 annually for SCV schools and nonprofit groups. When purchasing a ticket for the Santa Clarita Dodger Day event, residents can designate a specific school or nonprofit to receive the rebate.

A number of local nonprofit organizations that have received funding through the Dodger Day event include: the city’s Newhall Community Center, Boy Scouts of America Troop 2222, Cub Scout Group 58, the local Child & Family Center, the Betty Ferguson Foundation, the Santa Clarita Valley Boys & Girls Club, Hart baseball and softball programs, Community Benefits Funding Committee and the Let Me Sail organization.

The annual Santa Clarita Dodger Day is a great way to have a significant and positive impact in the community. In past years, groups including local businesses, local sports teams and churches have taken advantage of this event as a fun community outing that benefits the SCV.

I invite community members of all ages to head out to Dodger Stadium on May 19 to celebrate one of the city’s most beloved traditions, while supporting local organizations and rooting for the home team.

Tickets can be purchased now through May 10 online or at the city of Santa Clarita’s Aquatic Center, located at 20850 Centre Pointe Parkway. Discount prices are available to all Santa Clarita Valley residents, including: Preferred Field VIP and infield loge box $45, preferred field box $35, infield reserve $25, lower reserve $15, and all-you-can eat tickets in the right-field pavilion $29.
