Many Santa Clarita Valley residents may be celebrating a scaled-down holiday season this year, but creativity and vision can take holiday home decor to new heights.

Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Health Foundation's 28th annual Holiday Home Tour Gala on Friday will offer guests the chance to view an elaborately decorated home and maybe gather some holiday decorating inspiration at the same time.

The Home Tour will feature only one home this year - unlike the three to four homes of past years - but what a home it is.

The stunning 10,000-square-foot custom Sand Canyon estate of Wayne and Dianne Crawford will be transformed into a "winter wonderland" of holiday decor, Christmas trees and nostalgia.

Decorated by Jeanna Crawford, this year's home tour theme is "A Celebration of Family."

Each room, including an indoor pool, will be decorated in handmade and vintage elements with a unique theme.

This year's Holiday Home Tour Gala will combine the traditional tour and gala under one roof, said Julia Hicken, co-president of the Home Tour League.

"It's a one-stop event. Everything is here, so people can come and go through the house, see the beautiful décor, have some fantastic food, and enjoy the holiday atmosphere," she said.

Jeanna Crawford said she loves decorating for the holidays. She began decorating her own home Oct. 1.

"I believe that Christmas is one of the most wonderful times of the year," she said. "Anyone can decorate their own home beautifully for the holidays by using items that are meaningful to them," Crawford said.

The Crawford home is being decorated with handmade and vintage elements by their daughter-in-law Jeanna, who promises a festive look as "eclectic and unique as our family."

Guests will enter through the foyer, where a self-playing grand piano will resound with holiday tunes.
Inspirational quotes, original artwork and souvenirs of international travel give the home a sophisticated, yet whimsical air, which will be highlighted by the mix of classical and humorous decorations.

Salt Creek Grille will cater the gala, offering a decadent small-plate buffet and wine and martini bar to guests, who are free to explore the home, including the spectacular indoor pool festooned with floating wreaths and a large outdoor bar/patio area complete with a burning fireplace.

Funds raised from the Holiday Home Tour benefit Women's Services at Newhall Memorial, with this year's funds being designated specifically towards a new neonatal intensive care unit at the hospital. "The NICU is something our community really needs and we're honored to help make it happen," Hicken said.

Sharon Blowers and Jon Claitman are co-chairwomen of the 2008 Home Tour Gala. Sue Smyth will serve as home coordinator and Becki Basham is also a coordinator.

The day after the gala, shoppers can enjoy the annual Holiday Boutique at Newhall's Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church Assembly Hall from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 6. Sale items include clothing, handcrafted artwork, holiday décor, toffee and gift items.

Complimentary refreshments will be served in the "hospitality" room as Newhall Memorial's way of thanking the community for its support throughout the year, Hicken said.
