The Saugus High athletics program continues to get national recognition this season, as the Saugus girls soccer team finished ranked in the final ESPNHS Powerade Fab 50 Girls’ Soccer Winter Rankings and the softball team entered the ESPNHS Cal-High Sports Softball Top 20 list.

After becoming the first Foothill League school to win a CIF-Southern Section Division I soccer playoff game, when the Centurions defeated Tesoro in penalty-kicks, Saugus becomes the first local soccer team to finish the season in the website’s national rankings, where it sits at No. 32.

Saugus joins the Centurion girls cross country team and Golden Valley boys cross country teams as the only local teams to finish in the final ESPNHS rankings for their specific sport this season.

In softball, the Centurions came in at 15th in the state rankings, which were initially released on Monday, a day before Saugus’ 13-0 loss to West Ranch. Prior to that, Saugus (17-4) was unbeaten in Foothill League play and had lost to two other teams ranked in the state’s top 20 (Pacifica High of Garden Grove and Chino Hills).

Saugus was also listed as “on the bubble” of this week’s Fab 50 national softball rankings and West Ranch was on the bubble in the state poll.

The national soccer rankings include teams from the eight states which play girls soccer during the winter season: Arizona, California, Florida, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nevada and Texas.
