Hundreds are expected to take part in a Castaic Lake clean-up project sponsored by Santa Clarita Valley members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on Saturday, a church official said Tuesday.

"We'll paint rest rooms, curbs, storage units, plant ground cover and clean up trash," said LDS official Brenda George. "We expect between 500 and 700 people."

LDS church members will join an expected 60,000 volunteers across the state participating in Mormon Helping Hands-Serving Our Communities, a day of service designed to help communities throughout California, George said.

The Castaic Lake cleanup is one of hundreds of projects planned, she said.

"With their organized work effort, $26,000 will be saved in labor costs for the tax payers," Councilman Bob Kellar said. "Our sincere appreciation to the helping hands program and for all they do year after year."

Boy Scouts from at least eight local troops will support the cleanup, George said.

"Local Eagle Scouts will camp at the lake Friday night and get up to clear an area of trees from a riverbed," she said.
