Hart High track and cross country runner Austin O’Neil has signed with UCLA, according to Hart co-athletic direct Linda Peckham.

The senior owns the fastest 800- and 1,600-meter times in the Foothill League this season, at 1 minute, 54.9 seconds and 4:10.54, respectively. His top time in the 1,500, which is regularly contested at the college level, is 3:58.06 at the Arcadia Invitational on April 7.

Despite battling both mononucleosis and anemia during his junior track season, O’Neil finished fifth in the league in the 800. He was also a key part of the Indians’ return to the CIF State Cross Country Championships last November after a 17-year absence.

O’Neil will join five current Santa Clarita Valley products — all female — on UCLA’s track and field team, including Saugus graduates Amber Murakami and Marissa Kado, Canyon graduate Stevie Kennedy-Gold, Valencia graduate Faith Anumba and West Ranch graduate Jennifer Owen.

O’Neil is joined in this year’s UCLA distance running class by Cerritos College’s Daniel Herrera and Alexander Monsivaiz of Army & Navy High of Carlsbad.
