Hart High School’s dance team shows off its national win at the recent USA National Dance competition in Anaheim.

Dancers from the Santa Clarita Valley traveled to Anaheim at the end of March to participate in the 2012 USA Nationals Dance Competition. Teams from Canyon, Hart, West Ranch, Saugus and Valencia high schools competed in a variety of events and brought home some major awards, including USA Nationals Grand Champion.

Canyon competed in the open division and brought home first place national titles in X Small and Small Dance categories.

Stepping up to the championship level, Hart High School earned first place and a national title in the Medium Dance category. This is the second year in a row Hart has won national titles.

The 20-member team was awarded the prize for its Medium Jazz Dance a contemporary-style performance, which earned them high marks throughout their dance season.

Saugus High School had a strong showing, earning three first place national titles in Large, Novelty and Small categories. Saugus has a long history of being one of the most competitive dance teams in the area.

Valencia’s dance team earned a first place national title in the Medium Lyrical category and received the top honor of the 2012 USA Nationals Grand Champion. This is the second year in a row the team has earned this prestigious award.

“This is such a wonderful day for our team and school,” dance team adviser Michelle Brown said. “Every year, the competition seems to get a little bit tougher. It’s such a great honor to win again.”

Anyone who wishes to watch the championship performances can do so at the annual dance team shows to be performed throughout the area in April and May.

Hart will perform on April 20 and 21, while West Ranch is scheduled for April 21. Saugus will perform its championship-winning routines on May 4 and 5. Valencia will showcase their talents on April 27 and 28.
