More than 60 years ago, I was wounded at Anzio Beachhead in Italy. I never thought I'd have to tell young people that America fought in that conflict.
Veterans made it possible for today's young people and future generations to learn the real, often untold stories of ordinary young men, often just boys who answered their country's call and became heroes.
These soldiers left the comforts and freedom of home to brave the mud and heat, as well as the enemy.
Many never returned home or came back permanently disabled from their combat experience.
Now that we're losing our veterans at a rate of 1,000 a day due to declining health, let's give them the recognition they deserve.
