Canyon High has two new varsity soccer coaches.

The school hired former lower level coach Lou Aguilera earlier this month to replace Khris Savage.

Savage had been the Canyon head coach since the 2005-06 season but after a controversial end to the 2012 season, his tenure came to an end.

The Cowboys had to forfeit eight Foothill League games for use of an ineligible player.

Aguilera's first varsity team will feature seniors who were on the new varsity coach's 20-0 freshman Canyon team in 2010.

"He's enthusiastic about being back," said Canyon co-Athletic Director Rich Gutierrez. "He's a great guy and an exceptional coach. I think he'll be great for the program and great for the kids."

On the girls' side, Canyon has hired Derek Rusk, who works on campus as a math teacher.

Rusk replaces Andy Pringle, who was the Cownoys girls varsity coach for the last two seasons.

Rusk is a former Canyon High football star who was a member of the 1985 CIF championship team.

"He has a great delivery, great communication style, understands the game, works well with the kids," Gutierrez said. "And he's passionate about the game."
