A powerful spring storm lashed the Santa Clarita Valley on Friday, causing power outages, flooding intersections and dumping about an inch of water on city streets.

Traffic lights at 12 local intersections — including Bouquet Canyon Road at Central Park in Saugus and Whites Canyon Road at Stillmore Street in Canyon Country —  were down for a short while, but most were working by 5 p.m., Santa Clarita spokeswoman Gail Ortiz said.

Rainfall flooded several intersections, including Golden Valley Road at Centre Pointe Parkway and Bouquet Canyon Road at Seco Canyon Road in Saugus, Ortiz said.

Water also pooled in the southbound lanes of Interstate 5 north of Castaic, causing at least one vehicle to spin out before noon, according to the CHP.

Two manhole covers were lifted from their moorings by the water on Sierra Highway between Golden Valley Road and Friendly Valley Parkway, and a tree planted in a center divider of Soledad Canyon Road near the Saugus Speedway blew over, Ortiz said.

A mud slide was reported in the northbound lanes of Highway 14 just south of Escondido Canyon Road.

By 4:35 p.m., nearly 1 1/2 inches of rain had fallen in Saugus, according to reports from one local weather watcher.

The storm was a factor in 366 traffic collisions reported across Los Angeles County between 5 a.m. and 5 p.m., according to CHP reports.

“The weather was definitely a factor,” CHP Officer Tatiana Sauquillo said.

“People were not making accommodations for the rain,” she said. “They need to leave earlier for their commute, slow down on the highway and give each other plenty of space.”

Today’s high will be near 60 and tonight’s low could dip to 40, according to the weather service.
