Flipping the bird

I suggest to David Kirscher (‘Flipping the bird' is protected expression, Letters, Nov. 11) that even though "flipping off" a group of political demonstrators may be protected as a form of "political speech," how about practicing common decency? Just because it is legal doesn't make it right.

It amazes me how flippant people have become in using a gesture that means "F-YOU!" The First Amendment allows many different forms of expression, and I am so thankful to be living in this great U.S.A., but the pendulum has swung too far the other way. Wearing a shirt that illustrates vulgarity is a lot different than saying it directly to a person or group.
