Deputies arrested a man who reportedly broke into a Castaic home Thursday night and didn’t leave when confronted by the owner, a Sheriff’s Department official said.

The man, described as “an elderly man with lots of shaggy gray hair,” entered a home on the 32000 block of Ridge Route Road in Castaic and was approached by the resident, Sgt. Gary Miller said. It didn’t seem like it was a burglary attempt, but rather that the intruder might be suffering from mental illness.

“The resident showed up and made eye contact with the individual, and he decided to stick around and turn on the lights in the house,” Miller said.

About five units responded to the call made at 7:50 p.m. Thursday.
