California residents in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and Santa Barbara counties who had their homes damaged during the recent wildfires can register for federal and state disaster assistance and get claims help by calling 1-800-621-3362 (FEMA) (TTY 800-462-7585).

People living in the four counties can apply for aid from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the state of California by phone from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.

To register, call 1-800-621-3362 or go online at www.fema.gov. Applicants don't have to visit an assistance center to register.

Applicants should talk to their insurer and register with FEMA immediately and should not wait for the insurance settlement.

After registration, applicants can call the same 1-800-621-3362 number for the FEMA Helpline to update or check on the status of their application. The Helpline hours are 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
