Your God, my God

Dear John Graham Who Voted Yes on 8 (Letters, Nov. 13): You believe in the sanctity of marriage that is the design of God, our creator, and believe it should be between one man and one woman in a miraculous procreative purpose.

I'm wondering, then, if you think marriage applicants should be assessed for fertility before being given a marriage license? And what about when couples begin their union as fertile people and later become unable to procreate? Should their marriages then become void?

If we allow same-gender marriages, you question where the line will be drawn. Will people be able to marry children or animals, or have multiple spouses? I say how about if we draw the line at two human beings of legal age? Would that not be reasonable?

You're right that a gay lifestyle is not the same as a heterosexual lifestyle, but you go on to say that your God condemns (the former). What if my God says it's okay? The problem you have here is that marriage is a legal contract, not a religious one. In this country we live in a democracy, not a theocracy. If you're looking for theocratic rule, you'll have to move to a different country.

You say we are supposed to be one nation under God, but that phrase was only added to our Pledge of Allegiance in 1954. Most of our country's founding fathers proposed a separation of church and state and many were not Christians, but non-deists and other non-believers.
