Jacob Collier, of Stevenson Ranch, meets with a Siberian Husky Mix available for adoption at the Castaic Animal Shelter on Friday.

Animals with paws,  hooves and feathers at the Castaic Animal Shelter are discounted this weekend as the shelter tries to boost adoption rates.

The shelter, along with 15 others throughout Southern California, is offering deep discounts on all adoptions through Sunday in an event dubbed the Mega Match-A-Thon, aimed at doubling the number of pets that find homes.

On Friday, a number of residents were browsing the dogs, cats, horses, birds and other animals as the Mega Match-A-Thon kicked off.

One father-and-son duo had adopted a Labrador retriever from the Castaic shelter before, and they were looking at a pure white husky mix with blue eyes.

“If we could adopt them all, we would,” said Scott Collier of Stevenson Ranch, who was at the shelter with his son, Jacob.

One couple drove from Los Angeles in the hopes of adopting a puppy that was similar to the one they already owned.
Brendan Jackson came with his dog, Ralph, in tow to make sure the two dogs would get along. Jackson had adopted Ralph from the Castaic shelter about two years ago and said it was a great experience.

“They were super friendly, super helpful,” he said of the shelter’s personnel.

The puppy that Jackson had his eye on was still recovering from surgery when he arrived Friday, but he said he would try to work things out so he could take her home.

“If (residents) were thinking about adopting, this is a great weekend,” said Dani Caouette, a spokeswoman for Bark Avenue, which is coordinating the adoption event along with shelter representatives and the ASPCA.

The discounts will be offered 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Sunday, said Evelina Villa, spokeswoman for Los Angeles County Animal Care and Control.

Adoption fees vary based on the type of animal and how long the animal has been in the shelter, Villa said. Deeper discounts are available for animals that have been at the shelter more than 10 days.

The adoption fees include initial vaccinations and microchipping.

Samples from John Paul Pet products are offered, as well as free leashes and collars.

Last fiscal year, 2,350 animals were adopted out of the Castaic Animal Center, Villa said.

“We just want to encourage the public to come out to their local shelter and take advantage of the discounted fees, the free samples and, hopefully, adopt a pet,” Villa said.
