Foothill League track and field: The day of bounce backs

Saugus girls, Hart boys get back into win column

Coming off of losses in early Foothill League track and field showdowns last week, the Saugus girls and Hart boys picked themselves back up on Thursday.

The Centurion girls beat Hart 89-47 in their dual meet at Saugus High School, while the Hart boys beat the hosts 78-58.

In other action on Thursday, Canyon swept Valencia, with the boys winning 83-53 and the girls winning 89-47.

The Saugus girls had their 24-meet league winning streak snapped last week against Golden Valley, but Jenna Vincej and Rachel Eaton helped them rebound. Vincej won the 200-meter race in 26.61 seconds and the 400 in 59.06 seconds, while Eaton cleared 5 feet to win the high jump and leapt 30-8 to win the triple jump.

Also for Saugus, Chelsea Alpern won the 300 hurdles in 49.31 seconds and finished second in the 100 hurdles and triple jump, while Karis Frankian won the 1,600 in 5:20.83 and Jenay Jauregui won the 3,200 in 11:31.10. In the field, Saugus’ Angie Weiner won the shot put at 34-1 and Katie O’Brien won the discus with a mark of 92-9.

Hart’s winners included Presley Lambert in the 100 (12.77 seconds) and Augustina Hansen in the 800 (2:21.37).

Tim White won three events for the Hart boys, clearing 6-6 to win the high jump and going 21-11 3/4 in the long jump and 46-3 1/2 in the triple jump.

In a big showdown in the 1,600, Hart’s Austin O’Neil ran a 4:23.33 to beat Saugus’ A.J. Yarnall, who finished in 4:26.05. O’Neil also won the 800 and finished second in the 3,200.

Hart’s Riley Stauffer won the 110 hurdles in 16 seconds flat and the 100 in 11.24 seconds, and Connor Bellina won the pole vault by clearing 13-6.

For the Saugus boys, Yarnall rebounded from the 1,600 loss to win the 3,200 in 9:39.40, and Denley Rodriguez won both the shot put (50-9 1/2) and the discus (148-3).

Jeremy Gatewood ran the 400 in 50.13 to win, Quentin Hendrix won the 200 in 22.78 seconds, and the 4x100 (44.61 seconds) and the 4x400 (3:28.59) relay teams were victorious.

The Canyon boys improved to 2-0 in the league season, with the 4x400 team of Drew Wolitarsky, Dominic Pennucci, Joel Estrada and Devin Baldwin winning in 3:25.25.

Wolitarsky also won the 400 in 51.44 seconds, while Pennucci won the 200 in 22.27 seconds and Estrada won the 800 in 1:59.60.

Brenden Stach swept the hurdles events with times of 15.02 seconds in the 110 hurdles and 41.67 seconds in the 300 hurdles.

For Valencia, Clint Gingrich went 20-6 1/2 to win the long jump and 41 feet to win the triple jump. James Berkeley won the 100 in 10.9 seconds, and he teamed with Michael Carter, Nick Jones and Michael Kojin to win the 4x100 in 43.85 seconds.
As for the Canyon girls, they won the 4x400 in 4:04.66 with the team of Kendall Bietsch, Tiffini Stone, Erica Anunwah and Taylor Thomas.

Stone won the long jump at 17-8 and the triple jump at 36 feet, and Thomas won the 100 hurdles in 15.37 seconds and the 300 hurdles in 47.84 seconds. Distance runner Madison Hills won the 1,600 in 5:21.95 and the 800 in 2:27.27.

Valencia’s Kaitlyn Matthews cleared 5 feet to win the high jump, and Sandra Ikeora won the 100 in 12.6 seconds. Ikeora also joined Chanel Rogers, Raven Valley and Vanessa Edwards to win the 4x100 in 49.83.
