Hart’s Matt Johnson competes in the 200-yard freestyle on Tuesday at the Santa Clarita Aquatics Center. The Indians won both the boys’ meet and the girls’ meet.

The Hart swim team didn’t take part in any preseason dual meets before beginning the Foothill League season by defeating Canyon last week.

But on Tuesday afternoon, the Indians demonstrated once again they’re the team to beat by sweeping West Ranch at the Santa Clarita Aquatics Center.

The Indians’ boys team won 119-51, while the girls won 124-46, with Hart’s depth easily making up for any West Ranch individual wins on the day.

“Once our swimmers begin to swim every week,” said Hart head coach Steve Neale, “they’ll get more tuned into it.”
On Tuesday, the Indians (2-0 overall, 2-0 Foothill League) looked just fine.

“They were phenomenal, the fact that their A and B relay is swimming within seconds of each other,” said West Ranch head coach Aaron Worby. “To run two full lines like that, that are matching them, and the girls too. The C swimmers weren’t that far behind. They were racing each other.”

The meet was highlighted by strong individual performances from both Hart and West Ranch (0-3, 0-2).

Both squads had multiple swimmers hit CIF-Southern Section Division I automatic qualifying times.

For Hart, Matt Johnson qualified in the 200-yard freestyle race with a time of 1 minute, 44.47 seconds, with his brother Mitch Johnson qualifying in the 100-yard butterfly race in 52.21 seconds and in the 500 free in 4:42.99.

On the girls side, senior Nicole Antoniuk qualified in the 500 free in 5:06.97, but had already qualified for the event with a faster time against Canyon.

Tamara Santoyo also qualified for Hart, swimming the 50 free in 24.90 seconds.

Josh Lin set a West Ranch school record in the 100-yard breaststroke and swam an automatic CIF-SS qualifying time of 59.80, Taylor Poliseno qualified in the 50 free with a time of 24.73 and Courtney Chrzas swam a CIF-SS consideration time in the 100 breaststroke.

Both squads will return to the Santa Clarita Aquatics Center pool Saturday for the inaugural Santa Clarita Invitational.
