Sixth-graders Nicole Hoppes, Kiana Quick and Alina Truong are part of a student effort at Newhall School District to help local animals in shelters. The students organized a donation drive to collect care items for animals. For the story, see SCV Schools, A5.

All Paws In is a social action group that we created. We are sixth-graders in the Newhall School District, and we developed an ongoing outreach program because we have a passion to make a change in our community.

Right away, we knew we wanted to help the animals that were sadly abandoned and left in the care of our local animal shelter.

We set out donation boxes and collected items for the animal shelters so they can care for the animals. Some of these items include collars, bowls, toys, towels and blankets, food and dog clothes.

We realized that through small donations we can make a huge difference. Change can be implemented by educating others and collecting items on a small scale around the community. These smaller donations turned into hundreds of items for abandoned animals.

Through many letters and proposals, we were able to set up three boxes at each of these locations; Oak Hills and Wiley Canyon elementary schools and at Lady Di’s Cookie shop in Stevenson Ranch.

Over a two month period we have collected hundreds of small and large items. We can’t wait to make the delivery.

This was a learning experience for us in many ways: writing letters of proposals and accepting denials and acceptance letters, researching needs of animals, looking at data to decide what area was in the most need, writing persuasive letters to businesses and creating a Power Point presentation and a web page.

Thank you to all the people who donated. Your contributions are greatly appreciated.

Animals out there need us, and through a community effort we have helped them.
