The Master’s College runners Anthony Pizzo and John Gilbertson keep adding to their list of accomplishments.

Both runners qualified for the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics National Championships this past Friday in the 1,500-meter race.

Pizzo, a Canyon High graduate, set a new school record with a time of 3 minutes, 53.19 seconds at the Oxy Distance Carnival at Occidental College. Gilbertson, a Saugus native who went to Los Angeles Baptist, qualified for nationals with a time of 3:54, which also broke the old school record of 3:56.

Even though the outdoor track and field season is only a couple weeks old, the junior runners have now qualified for nationals in four different events. They met the ‘A’ standards in the 5,000, the marathon and the half marathon in addition to the 1,500.

Last season, Pizzo finished fourth at nationals in the 5,000, while Gilbertson wound up 11th. This year, the national championships will take place from May 24-26 at Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Ind.
