Winter sports: CIF honors eight

Five local basketball players and three local soccer players have been honored as All-CIF Southern Section selections.

In basketball, Canyon senior Coley Apsay made the Division IIAA team, while West Ranch junior Ako Kaluna was honored on the Division IA team and Trinity senior James Brooks made the Division VI team.

For the girls, Saugus senior Megan Dawe made the Division IIA team and Canyon senior Tiffini Stone was selected to the Division IIAA squad.

Saugus senior Serena Smith-Banas was honored in soccer as an All-CIF Division I selection, while Santa Clarita Christian senior Chad Latch made the boys Division VII team and junior midfielder Megan Gallagher made the girls team.

Apsay capped an excellent career by averaging 18.1 points and three assists per game while leading the Cowboys to their first league title since 2006. He was named Foothill League Player of the Year for his efforts by the coaches.

Kaluna averaged 16.1 points, 10.9 rebounds and three assists per game in leading West Ranch to a share of its first Foothill League title and the Division IA quarterfinals, where the Wildcats lost to top seed Mission Viejo. Brooks led Trinity to the Omega League championship and the Division VI second round, averaging 14.7 points, 9.7 rebounds and 3.9 blocks along the way.

Dawe, the Foothill League Player of the Year, averaged 19.7 points and 9.9 rebounds in leading Saugus to a share of its first league championship since 2009, while Stone helped Canyon clinch a share of the league title and led the Cowboys to the Division IIAA quarterfinals.

In soccer, Smith-Banas had three goals and four assists but really stood out defensively. She was named Foothill League Player of the Year.

Latch, a midfielder, scored 16 goals and also had 12 assists as the Cardinals reached the second round of the Division VII playoffs. Gallagher also led the SCCS girls to the Division VII playoffs, where they lost to Vistamar in the first round.
