College of the Canyons sophomore Chris Low ran the fastest collegiate time this season in the 800-meter race, running a time of 1 minute, 50.30 seconds to win at the California Relays on Friday at Cerritos College.

His time is the best among NCAA Divisions I, II and II along with NAIA, according to COC sports information director Celina Baguiao.

Low's mark is a little more than a second shy of the Santa Clarita Valley record in the 800, which was set by Hart High graduate Chuck Kirkby in 1955. He ran a 1:49.06 while competing for Mt. San Antonio College.

Low set his previous personal record with a time of 1:51.19 on April 15, 2011, at the Bryan Clay Invitational. The Canyon High graduate is the defending California Community College Athletic Association state champion in the 800.

The nation’s next-fastest time is close by, in a couple different ways. Freshman Cole Williams, who runs for Occidental College, posted a time of 1:50.31 at the Oxy Distance Carnival on the same day that Low ran his time.
