Arroyo Seco Junior High School students will debut their production of “Grease” this week at the school.

The musical opens at 7 p.m. tonight and continues Wednesday and Thursday nights. Tickets will be sold at the door and are $3 for students and $7 for adults.

“We are very excited about ‘Grease,’” Kandis Taylor, the school’s band and music director, said. “There hasn’t been a large-scale musical production like this at the school in many years. I feel that we are opening the floodgates in starting a new musical tradition here at the school. With no drama program, no choir program, and really no funds, we have built this production from the ground up. It is amazing what these kids have accomplished.”

Everything in the school musical is student produced.

The musical, directed by Taylor and Shan Stewart, features live music played by students in the band program.

Many of the backdrops were drawn by Priscilla Nielsen’s advanced art class.

Cast, chorus and stage crew, which includes sound and lighting, are all put on by seventh- and eighth-grade students.

Since November, students have met once a week after school for two hours to put the production together.

“It has been quite the intense process, but great things have resulted,” Taylor said.

Many upgrades have been made in Arroyo Seco’s multi-purpose room including new lighting and sound equipment.

Administration also agreed to open a show choir class as part of the musical courses offered at the school, Taylor said. This will be a yearlong performing class in which a portion of the curriculum will be learning the vocal parts in next year’s musical.

Arroyo Seco is located at 27171 Vista Delgado Drive in Valencia.
