The sense of anticipation was high for hundreds of people waiting in line in the shadows of a local theme park’s thrill rides on Saturday.

Instead of waiting to experience the latest roller coaster however, these people were vying for jobs at the Six Flags Magic
Mountain and Hurricane Harbor job fair.

Doris Hoxha, 16, heard about the fair from friends and applied for a position as a Hurricane Harbour lifeguard, she said.

“They’ll train me to be a lifeguard,” Hoxha said. “I think the pay is minimum wage, but I hope they call me back.”

The park has about 2,000 positions to fill through the end of summer, including food services worker, loss prevention auditor, park services attendant and others, according to sixflagsjobs.com.

The fair was held in the picnic pavilion near the park’s main gate area and applicants showed up in droves, Magic Mountain spokeswoman Sue Carpenter said.

“We’ve probably had at least a couple of thousand applicants,” she said.

Interested applicants must be 14 or older and apply online at the website before arriving at the job fair, Carpenter said.

“When they go online, they’ll get an idea of what department they want to work in,” she said.

When applicants reached the pavilion, they were able to discuss the job possibilities in a variety of departments to help determine if they would be a good fit for that position, Carpenter said.

While the vast majority of job-seekers at the fair were teenagers, 51-year-old Maxine Flam attended as a final act of desperation before she moves to Pennsylvania to live with family, she said.

“I’ve been looking for a job for two years, but it’s hopeless,” Flam said.
Flam, a Santa Clarita Valley resident, has lived in California since 1964 and is currently receiving unemployment benefits.

Previously, she worked in the aerospace community for five years, but was laid off, she said. Before that, she was laid off from a health care industry job, Flam said.

“This job fair is my last gasp,” she said.

Six Flags Magic Mountain is located at 26101 Magic Mountain Parkway in Valencia.
