After a flurry of wild events in the final week of Santa Clarita Valley soccer, After a flurry of wild events in the final week of Santa Clarita Valley soccer, it has shaken down to this.

A total of 11 local teams have made the CIF-Southern Section boys and girls soccer playoffs - none with more different stories than the teams at Saugus High School.

After Saugus girls went 20 Foothill League contests without a loss, the Centurions went through a string of three straight games without a victory.

Then came last week, when Saugus finished Foothill League play with a victory over Golden Valley on Thursday, resulting in the preseason favorites claiming the league title.

Now the Cents host 10-7-3 Tesoro on Friday in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division I playoffs.

Saugus, which was once ranked as high as the No. 25 team in the country according to ESPN Rise, has a potentially rough match in the second round with No. 2-seeded San Clemente.

On the boys' side, Saugus picked up nine points in 24 hours between Thursday and Friday, benefiting from a win on Thursday and two games Canyon forfeited to the Centurions in which the Cowboys used an ineligible player.

The Saugus boys, though, take the long trek to Nipomo (12-9-3) for a Thursday first-round Division III matchup.

Sticking with the boys, Valencia is the first team on the docket.

The Vikings, who finished tied for third in the Foothill but lost a third-place tiebreaker to Saugus, plays at 9-8-2 Dominguez today at 3 p.m. in a Division III wild card.

That winner plays Thursday at 21-2-2 Knight, which owns a 3-1 victory over the Vikings this season in the Hart Tournament.

"Going in as an at-large, it's a hard road, but we're happy to be there," said Valencia head coach Tony Scalercio. "We're just happy to have the opportunity to extend our season."

Back to Thursday, Foothill League boys champion West Ranch hosts Los Padres League third-place Cabrillo (15-8-3), while Foothill second-place Hart travels to Sunkist League No. 2 Norte Vista at 11-6-1.

The two local private schools enter the mix in Division VII as Santa Clarita Christian hosts Arrowhead League No. 2 La Sierra Academy at 10-7-0.

Trinity Classical Academy plays its first-ever boys playoff soccer game by traveling to play Warrior League second-place West Shores at 9-4-4.

All the local girls first-round games are scheduled for Friday.

But playoff action for the girls kicks off on Wednesday as West Ranch travels to play Huntington Beach in a Division I wild card. This marks the first-ever playoff berth for West Ranch girls soccer.

Hart hosts 17-5-3 Chaminade and Valencia travels to play Citrus League No. 2 Redlands at 14-4-5.

Finally, Santa Clarita Christian plays at 13-1-1 Vistamar in Friday's Division VII first round.

All games are scheduled for 3 p.m.
