Local Disney Store gets makeover

Disney characters celebrate the remodeling of a Disney Store. Disney will remodel stores in 12 countries this year.

The Disney Store at Westfield Valencia Town Center is one of 13 locations nationwide getting a makeover this year that includes interactive features and layouts.

The current Disney Store across from J.C. Penney will stay open until April, when the new 4,500 -square-foot location on the Patio finishes construction. The grand opening is April 14.

Disney’s new store design debuted in the New York’s Times Square location in 2010 and aims to deliver an experience closer to being in one of Disney’s parks than being in a mall.

Each day at the new stores, a child is chosen to unlock the store in a ceremony and gets to keep the key. Designwise, a portion of the store will be turned into a Disney Princess Neighborhood and Castle, with video clips from all the princesses.

Included in the stores scheduled for remodeling or relocation in 2012 are California Disney Stores at the South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa, the Westfield Valley Fair Mall in Santa Clara and the Westfield Valencia Town Center retail store.

Each renovated store will have a theater where customers can choose various video clips to watch on a 12-foot screen, and trees and skylines will change with the weather and seasons.

“We’re excited to create the best 30 minutes of a child’s day,” said Jim Fielding, president of Disney Stores, in a statement.

Westfield Valencia Town Center Manager Raj Chandani said Westfield reached out to Disney about making Valencia one of the renovated locations.

“We wanted to merchandize the Patio wing with more children’s stores, and what better fit than to put the Disney store?” Chandani said. “It was perfect districting for us.”

The grand opening at the Patio location is Saturday, April 14 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
