Two days after West Ranch won its first-ever CIF-Southern Section team tennis playoff match in history, the Wildcats' season ended Thursday, in a blowout loss to Valencia of Placentia.

West Ranch (10-3, 8-2) played some tough tennis but was no match for Valencia of Placentia in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division III Girls Team Tennis Playoffs.

"It was not the prettiest one we've played," said Wildcats head coach Eric Spiecker. "That's about as bad as we've ever lost a match. We had some close matches."

On Tuesday, West Ranch beat Paso Robles in the wild card round 14-4.

West Ranch was the second-place team out of the Foothill League. It was a wild card team in the playoffs.
Valencia of Placentia, a team that won the CIF-SS Division IV championship two years in a row, are the first-place team from the Empire League.

The lone victory by West Ranch came from the sophomore No. 1 doubles team of True O'Neill and Mallory Martin. The duo won, 6-2.

O'Neill and Martin lost a separate match, 5-7. The pair was 30-1 going into the playoffs.

"I think True and Mallory have a great future," Spiecker said.

The Wildcat sister doubles team of senior Gavelyn Poonnopatam and freshman Lena Poonnopatam, lost one match in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-3).

The Poonnopatams, who played as the Nos. 2 and 3 singles players most of this season, did not hold onto a 5-4 lead. They also lost 6-3 in another match.

"We knew that they were real tough in singles," Spiecker said. "The only chance we had was in doubles."
Ana Lucia Fuentes, West Ranch's No. 1 singles player, lost 6-3, 6-2, 6-1.

Angela Garcia and Aimee Choi, both seniors, each lost their matches. Garcia lost in her No. 2 singles spot, 6-0, 6-4. Choi lost 6-0.
