A group of 39 Bowman High School students and four teachers recently took a field trip to Universal Technical Institute in Rancho Cucamonga.

During the visit, Universal Technical Institute representative Joan Serra and former William S. Hart Union High School District student
Adrian Cross provided a guided tour of the facility. Students were taken through fully equipped shop environments, where they watched teams of Universal Technical Institute students work on state-of-the-art vehicles provided by Ford, Mercedes and BMW.

At the High Performance Lab, students witnessed a team of Universal Technical Institute students cranking up the RPMs to ear-piercing levels on a drag racer. When they visited the Refrigeration Lab, students learned how big rigs maintain minus-20-degree temperatures so that products, such as ice cream, can make the drive across even the hottest desert regions of the country.

“There must be over a million dollars worth of equipment in this room alone, just counting the big rigs,” Bowman’s Work Experience Coordinator Mike Nugent said, after seeing the 10 big-rig cabs.

Bowman High School student Arjun Malhotra enjoyed the visit.

“When I first saw the school, I was really impressed with how the campus looked, and I felt like I belonged there,” he said. “I think I liked the Ford room the best.”

Other Bowman students, like Gabe Huerta and Trevor Jones, want to work in the industry after graduation. Bowman student Jon Sweitzer co-owns Sims Customs, which is located in Santa Clarita.

“If I went to UTI, I’d want to get certified in Ford, Mercedes and other standard automotive training,” he said.
