The Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy driving his personal vehicle was trying to turn from the far left lane on the southbound side of The Old Road, less than one mile north of Rye Canyon Road, onto the
Interstate 5 onramp, said Sgt. Brian Allen of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station. The deputy never finished his turn, Allen said, as a Toyota Prius traveling northbound struck the truck, knocking off the rear passenger-side wheel.
"We don't know if speed was a factor. We are still investigating," he said. The deputy's name is being withheld pending an investigation.
Krystal Pomatto, 21, was the Prius driver in the incident, said Heather Taylor, Pomatto's co-worker, who arrived on the scene to find her friend in an ambulance.
"She was coming back from her lunch break. Another co-worker saw the car wreck in the intersection and thought it might be Krystal's car," Taylor said.
Pomatto was taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital with minor injuries. Taylor followed the ambulance to the hospital.
