The Saugus girls volleyball team exited the CIF-Southern Section Division I-A playoffs.

But definitely not without a battle.

After dropping the first two games of the match, the Centurions came back to win the third game, then they were resistant in the fourth.

Despite Saugus' effort, the Centurions lost to Serrano in the desert town of Phelan 25-18, 25-21, 21-25, 30-32.

"It was within three points the whole game, then the last one was back and forth, back and forth," said Saugus head coach Zach Ambrose.

But it wasn't enough.

Ambrose pointed to the fact that he was missing outside hitter Kacie Crawford due to injury, and setter Alyssa Terwall played through the pain of a re-aggravated stress fracture in her foot.

Terwall did contribute 46 assists.

Fellow senior Katie Estes made 16 kills and three blocks.

Freshman Jaclyn Clark made 16 kills and had 17 digs.

Terwall and Estes will be two big losses for next season, but the cupboard isn't bare, Ambrose said.

Junior Taylor Schubert and Clark will both be counted on to keep Saugus competitive next season.
The Centurions finished the season 20-6.

Marymount 3, Hart 0
It was a surprise that the Hart girls volleyball team made it to the CIF-Southern Section Division I-A playoffs.

So head coach Mary Keen chalked this one up to experience.

The Indians fell in the first round of the tournament against Marymount High in Los Angeles, 25-13, 25-17, 25-20.

"To have the girls play against someone of that caliber propels them to step up," Keen said. "We saw great volleyball. I'm glad to end season on a good note and play great volleyball."

Marymount was a tough draw as the squad had been to two consecutive CIF finals.

The Indians (9-12) were led offensively by junior Jennie Long, who had five kills. Senior Jen Drake finished with four kills. Junior Amber Olson put away four kills. Junior Breena Beckett had five blocks.

Hart only had two seniors this season and will look to build on the playoff berth for next season.

Junior setter/opposite hitter Casey David and junior libero Allison Toledo are also expected to return next season.

Hart 10, La Quinta 8
Hart's varsity tennis team defeated La Quinta High School at La Quinta, 10-8, in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division III playoffs.

Leading the Indians was the doubles team of Emily Van Houdt and Ingrid Jelderks, who won all three of their sets, 6-3, 6-2, 6-1.

Anne Susdorf remianed undefeated in match play by sweeping in singles, 6-0, 6-0, 6-1.

Shelly Sachdeva also swept in the No. 2 spot, winning 6-1, 6-1, 6-0.

The doubles team of Jessica Martinez and Stacy Waung clinched the playoff victory, winning the final set of the day, 7-5.

On Thursday, Hart travels to San Luis Obispo.
