The wait is finally over for the Golden Valley girls varsity soccer team.

The Grizzlies jumped out to an early lead on Friday at Golden Valley high school and defeated Valencia 2-1 for the first Foothill League victory in program history.

Golden Valley’s Jordan Dulay sent a cross into the box in the 11th minute that was knocked away by the goalkeeper before Samantha Jennings put the rebound in the back of the net.

“(Jennings) was really motivated for this game, the whole team was,” said Golden Valley head coach Charles Martinez. “And she capitalized on a cross from Jordan. I put her up as a forward, she made a cross the goal keeper jumped up and dropped the ball and Sam came up and picked up the mistake. (That goal) gave us a big plus, big confidence going in the attack a little more.”

In the second half, Jennings padded the Grizzlies’ lead on a counter attack when she beat Valencia’s backline, and put home the game’s second goal.

“In the second half we played a lot more defensively because we knew we would have the wind against us,” Martinez said. “So I dropped Samantha on top as a forward to go in and get the counter attack and that’s what happened.”

With the loss, Valencia fell to 7-11-1, 2-4-0 on the season.

The Grizzlies (6-8-2, 1-4-1) will go for their second win on Tuesday when they travel to West Ranch High.

But for now, they’ll celebrate Friday’s victory.

“I told the girls: ‘Were going to celebrate now, but Monday we have to come back and work and we have another game on Tuesday and we’ll have to forget about this win and work. They already know they celebrated this, but they have in their mind that they have a big commitment to winning.”
