First place

Christopher Kariuki

Grade 5

Live Oak Elementary School

I am looking forward to some things this year. So not to waste your time, I’ll only announce the three best ones.

First, during summer vacation my mother, father, brother and I will go and visit relatives in Kenya, all the way in Africa. It has been a while since I saw family there.

Second, this would be my last year in Live Oak Elementary School, which I’m a little happy about. So, in mid-August I’ll be going to Castaic Middle School. So, I’m excited about that.

Last, around Christmas, I’m going to have my family reunion. My family is still deciding, but they narrowed it down to three states: here in great California, by my parents; a little far from here, in New York or Massachusetts, by my grandmother’s brother; or beautiful Hawaii, just for a change and to relax.

So, thanks for reading my top three events that I’ll attend soon, but there may be a change in plan.

There is a saying that goes “Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. But the greatest gift of all is now. That’s why they call it the present.”

Second place

Grade 5

This year, I am looking forward to summer. Summer is my favorite time of the year, when you get to be with your friends.

In summer, I get to sleep in and not have to get ready for school and wake up early and have breakfast and brush your teeth and do homework. Homework stinks!

I am also looking forward to getting an iPod, Wii, Kinect and a PSP.

This year, I am going to graduate, and I am going to be in the teacher vs. student kickball game.

And what’s cool about this year is we have seven field trips! Seven field trips is the most field trips I have ever been on in a year.

This year, I just can’t wait for July, when all my relatives and my family go to Oregon and we get to ride four-wheelers. On the Fourth of July, they put on a fireworks show. We also go to the lake to go fishing. When we’re done, we make our own ice cream and pop poppers at each other’s feet. Ouch!

What’s really cool about going to Oregon is we get to rent an R.V. and drive all the way to Oregon. We stop at many restaurants, stores and R.V. stops. At some R.V. stops, there are cranky, rude and grumpy old people, but I can live through it.

I am also looking forward to Easter. During Easter, I get to go to my grandparents’ house for an Easter egg hunt. The eggs have money in them, just like at home. One time, I found one from the year before. I just can’t wait.

Third place

I am looking forward to my brithday. It’s going to be in June, but we’re not going to be here in June. We are all having a summer break.

But before we go, since we’re having a party I might bring some cupcakes in, well, only if my mom wants to.

I like birthdays because there’s cake, presents, balloons and sometimes there’s a pinata.

The No. 1 thing I like about birthdays are presents. They are my favorites, and when I see somebody opening a cool present, I get a little jealous, but I get over it.

But birthdays aren’t just about presents, cake and balloons. No, they’re to spend time with family. So, my birthday is what I am looking forward to this year.

What I’m looking forward to next year is to have a better year, because 2011 was terrible. Bad things were happening in my family. So, I’m hoping this year will be good.

So, I’m looking forward to my birthday since it’s in February. I’m turning 11, and then I’m closer to being 12.

And I’m going to a place called the Gentle Barn.

So I get to go to Las Vegas, Pasadena and Palm Springs for a competition. My aunt is flying in from New York to see my competition.

Sonia Flores

Grade 5

Live Oak Elementary School

What I am really looking forward to this year is going to Arkansas to my uncle’s house. My mom said my dad is going to try real hard to get vacation time in the summer.

Another thing that I am looking forward to this year is trying to spend time with my cousin Stephanie. She said she is heading out to the Marines in August, so we are thinking of going to Magic Mountain by July; we may even go to the movies.

Lastly, I am looking forward to just being able to spend more time with my grandparents because they work too much. I guess that is it. Good bye.

Eusebio Morales

Grade 5

Live Oak Elementary School

I am looking forward to my birthday for this year, because I always get to have fun with my family and it’s a new year.

On my birthday, my uncle makes barbecue, then I play games with my cousins, and we eat. Then we play music and cut my cake.

Dylan Santa Cruz

Grade 5

Live Oak Elementary School

The part I’m looking forward to most in the year is the year itself. I can’t wait for the new things to come in 2012.

I am also very excited for my birthday.

I wonder what surprises the new year will bring me.

Me and my friend from Virginia always get to see each other over the summer. That’s one of the parts I’m really excited about for this year.

Grade 5

Live Oak Elementary School

What I am looking forward to is in April my baby sister is going to be born. Also, in summer, I might be going to Mexico.

Later in the year, the whole class is going to Castaic Lake again.

I think this or next week, my dad is coming back from Mexico because he went to go see my grandpa who died two days before New Year’s, and so I can see the videos and pictures of my family and cousins that live there.

Ths thing I’m looking forward to is camp trip, because I want to see how it looks like this year. Has anything changed?

The thing I want to do is go rock climbing, because at Mountasia, I went rock climbing and I enjoyed it. That is why I want to go to camp.

The other thing I’m looking forward to is going to the lake again, because it’s fun over there at Castaic Lake.

Emma McCann

Grade 5

Live Oak Elementary School

This year, I’m looking forward to a road trip with my family over summer vacation. We are going to Oregon and I am so excited we are going to stay for about a week. We are going to visit caves and aquariums.

We also might see our cousins and their dog. That’s what I’m looking forward to this year.

Crystal Orozco

Grade 5

Live Oak Elementary School

The biggest thing I’m looking forward to is promotion from elementary school. So next year, I’ll be a sixth-grader in Castaic Middle School.

My biggest worry is the homework and not knowing any teachers. Then I have to go to six different classes, like math, science, history, advisory, E.L.A. and P.E. That is what I am looking forward to this year.

Shay Hulin

Grade 5

Live Oak Elementary School

I am so happy that 2012 is here, because this summer I am going to Louisiana and Texas. Most of my family lives in Louisiana, like my great-grandma, who is 102!

And my grandma, my cousins, my uncles and my aunts.

I only have a couple of people in my huge family who live in Texas, like my Aunt Cindy, Uncle Mike and their two kids, Joshua and Jacob.

I want to at least be able to see my great-grandma before she dies. But I hope she never dies.

I’m also looking forward to seeing my niece, Dazlyn. She turned two on Jan. 13.

Speaking of birthdays, mine is still so far away. Mine is on Dec. 12. This year, I will be 12.

Pamela Razalan

Grade 5

Live Oak Elementary School

What am I looking forward to this year? Well, I’m looking forward to graduation and also our big campfield trip!

I also can’t wait when I turn 11 this year. The day I’m really looking forward to is the next year! That’s all I’m looking forward to this year.

Angel Cruz

Grade 5

Live Oak Elementary School

This year I’m looking forward to going camping and making a mask.

I can’t wait to go camping. I always wanted to go camping. I hope we make s’mores or tell ghost stories and sleep in a tent. I hope this field trip comes soon.

I can’t wait to make a mask. I like techno, so I’m going to make a  mask of my favorite artist, DJ Blend. He wears a Chucky mask so no one sees his face. I wonder if we make the whole mask by ourselves.

I’m also looking forward to being in the kickball game I hope we win, and going to the lake again.

I hope this time we get to swim in the water.

I’m also looking forward to going to Mexico. I’ve been there when I was a little kid, and I loved it. I hope to get fireworks, candy and some little toy that, when you pull the string, the wheel just flies off. I don’t remember what it was called.

I’m also looking forward to selling coupon books for the fundraiser, and my sister’s birthday. It is on Wednesday. I hope I have a great day on Wednesday. I think I might get her a bunch of ice cream. She’s been wanting rocky road.

Vince Quintana

Grade 5

What I’m looking forward to this year is summer because I love to swim. I have a pretty big pool and I have a water slide.

In the summer, a lot of my friends come over and we have tons of fun.

My brother’s birthday is in the summer, and I have lots of fun that day. Well, have a nice day and thank you.

Alan Montoya

Grade 5

Live Oak Elementary School

This year, I am looking forward to doing better in school and going to the camping field trip, but the best part is beating the teachers in the kickball game.

And my friend’s birthday is coming up.

So, this is my story. The end.

Matthew Ruiz

Grade 5

Live Oak Elementary School

I’m looking forward to a lot of things. But the thing of what I’m looking forward to is sixth grade because I get lockers, and I get to change classes and you get to choose and extra class, like Spanish, art and more. I think it would be fun. Also, I think the extra class is going to be fun. That’s what I’m looking forward to.

Nonnie Howard

Grade 5

Live Oak Elementary School

I’m looking forward to the camp trip thing that we’re doing at my school. I think it will be a blast. It will have all kinds of stuff, and it will be fun. There’s going to be friends there, so I get to hang out, too. It’s going to be the funnest trip ever.

Joshua Richard

Grade 5

Live Oak Elementary School

I am looking forward to hanging out at the beach, playing with my friends and going to one place they go to every year in Las Vegas, the Tahiti Village. It has a lazy river and six pools combined together. It also has really nice rooms with one big bed and a big TV. I love the Tahiti Village.

I also can’t wait for the fifth-grade field trip to Valley Trails. We get to go on a zipline, and go swimming, and play archery and much more. I love it.

Aleister D.

Grade 5

Live Oak Elementary School

What I’m looking forward to is the world is going to end this year, man!

I probably doubt it, but it would probably end. I just hope the world doesn’t end because I got a lot of things I want to do, man!

So, who knows that the world is going to end, but let’s see. ’Cause people think humans are going to get on a big ship and all of the people will survive, but ’cause people watching “2012” they think the world is going to end this year, man!

And that people are gonna get on a big ship and sail the world forever, until people think the sun finally turns into a black hole and sucks up the galaxy. The end.

Robert Barajas

Grade 5

Live Oak Elementary School

This year, I am looking forward to two things.

First, a Nintendo 3DS.

Second is an adopted brother because my mom can’t have any more babies, and I have five sisters and I am the only boy in the family.

I want the Nintendo 3Ds because you could take pictures and transfer Miis to your 3Ds from your Wii. And you can buy games that are for normal DSs and still play them.

Alissandra Penaranda

Grade 5

Live Oak Elementary School

This year is my last year at this school. Fifth and fourth grade were my favorite school years in school.

This year, I am looking forward to our fifth grade graduation and going to the middle school.

My sister is in the middle school, but the part I’m bummed out on is that my sister is graduating, too, so she will go to high school.

And that is what I am looking forward to this year. Thank you for listening to what I am looking forward to.

Note to the readers: Have fun in middle school.

Sandra Vega

Grade 5

Live Oak Elementary School

I am looking forward to graduation this year. Last year, my brother graduated from Live Oak Elementary. He got his diploma, and that year, he got an award for respect.

Last year, I saw a lot of fifth-graders in fancy clothing. The girls were wearing dresses, makeup and high-heels, and the boys were wearing tuxedos.

The best part was when they went home for the day. I just can’t wait for graduation!

Josh Hall

Grade 5

Live Oak Elementary School

I am hoping to have a great birthday. It’s next month. I want a bunch of my closest friends there, and also not so close.

My house is gonna be a big scene. Usually we play video games and eat cake. And we find soda in our sleeping bags.

Other than that, I’m just hoping the world does not explode! Yeah, so I guess I will play “Halo: Reach,” play outside and hang in the clubhouse up on the hill.

Ryan Eberle

Grade 5

Live Oak Elementary School

I’m looking forward to summer break. The reason is because I don’t have to worry about homework and school. I can just relax and have fun. I probably hang out with my friend and play on my Xbox 360. I hope I have a great summer, and I hope you do, too.

Sam Card

Grade 5

Live Oak Elementary School

I am looking forward to go to the mall, celebrate my birthday, have Easter, Valentines Day, Fourth of July, Halloween and Christmas.

And I can’t wait to turn 12 on Dec. 14.

I still can’t believe we passed 2012. It will be the fastest and funnest year. And it always gets better.
