UPDATE: Strickland announces bid for congressional district

Sen. Tony Strickland, R-Moorpark, officially declared his candidacy Tuesday for the newly drawn 26th Congressional District seat, which takes in part of the Santa Clarita Valley’s West Side.

Speaking to a gathering at the Aviation Museum in Camarillo, Strickland confirmed what many have been anticipating for more than a week — since U.S. Rep. Elton Gallegly, R-Simi Valley, announced Jan. 7 that he was retiring and would not seek re-election.

Strickland becomes the seventh candidate to enter the race for the congressional district, which is more Democratic than Gallegly’s previously drawn district.

Strickland also faces an open June primary, which means the names of the top two vote-getters appear on the November ballot, whatever their party affiliations.

Strickland’s state Senate district takes in the western part of the Santa Clarita Valley. If he moves on to a congressional seat, the Senate district would be without an incumbent in the next election.

After thanking military officials for allowing him to make his announcement at the military museum Tuesday, Strickland made five references to the United States military in his six opening statements after welcoming people to the event.

“I am asking to become your next congressman,” he told the group.

“Here today, we’re surrounded by symbols of our nation’s strength and I am reminded that we live in a dangerous and increasingly unstable world.

“Iran. Afghanistan. Pakistan. North Korea. Syria. America’s mission to defend freedom has never been more important.”
The newly drawn 26th Congressional District takes in Naval Base Ventura County, including Point Mugu and Port Hueneme, and extends eastward as far as Interstate 5 in the Santa Clarita Valley.

Among his allies Strickland counts House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy, R-Bakersfield.
