The Dollar General Corp. is leasing 439,000 square feet of warehouse space in the Tejon Ranch Commerce Center, joining IKEA, Famous Footwear and Caterpillar Inc. The announcement by Tejon Ranch Company and Rockeller Group Development Corporation was made Tuesday.

Located some 44 miles northwest of Santa Clarita, near Lebec, Dollar General plans to use the space as a warehouse distribution center — its 11th — to expand in California.

“The Tejon Ranch distribution center is strategically located to serve our supply chain needs as we continue to expand westward,” said John Flanigan, Dollar General’s executive vice president of global supply chain.

The new facility, which is anticipated to begin operations in April, will eventually employ approximately 250 people. Hiring begins in March.

Last month, Caterpillar announced it was purchasing 46 acres at the site to build a 400,000-square-foot parts distribution facility.

The Tejon Ranch Commerce Center is the result of a joint venture of up to 500 acres within the Commerce Center between the Tejon Ranch Company and Rockefeller Group. The area has also been designated a Foreign Trade Zone which exempts companies from customs tariffs until their products leave the zone and formally enter U.S. Customs Territory. For products being shipped to foreign countries, the companies are exempt from duty payments helping U.S. companies remain more competitive.

As for Dollar General, the Tennessee-based retailer has 9,800 stores in 38 states but is adding California as its 39th state and plans to open 50 stores throughout California in 2012.

“From its central location, our supply chain team can deliver goods to stores in northern and southern California in a day,” Flanigan said.
