A man died after being struck by an oncoming vehicle as he crossed highway lanes by foot to deal with an initial collision on Saturday morning along Interstate 5 just south of Highway 138, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Adrian Garcia.

About 5 a.m., CHP received a call concerning a wrong-way driver heading southbound in the northbound lanes.

CHP officers believe the wrong-way driver stalled in the middle of the highway when his vehicle was struck by another vehicle heading north, according to Garcia.

One of the parties, believed by CHP to be the wrong-way driver, exited his vehicle to make contact with the other party after the dust settled from the collision.

While crossing lanes to make contact, he was struck by a van and found dead at the scene, Garcia said.

CHP could not release any identifying information.

The two other drivers involved suffered no major physical injuries and the driver who hit the victim was released, Garcia said.

The incident is under investigation, he said.
