It wasn’t a perfect tournament for Canyon girls soccer.

But head coach Andy Pringle likes the progress of his young team so far this season.

The Cowboys secured third place in Flight 1 of the Hart Soccer Showcase on Wednesday at Hart High School by beating Agoura High 2-0 in the team’s final game of the tournament.

“The main thing for the girls today was just to stick with how they’re playing,” Pringle said. “They’re playing really good defense and they’re passing really well.”

Canyon (4-4-4) got its first goal of the game when Sarah Cipperly headed in a corner kick from Alexia Cena in the first half, making it 1-0.

The lead was doubled in the second half when freshman Kyla Danforth kicked a powerful shot in from about 25 yards away off of a volley.

Earlier in the day, Canyon lost 1-0 to Quartz Hill, placing the Cowboys second in pool play.

“It was a very close game,” Pringle said of the loss. “It was a shame because all we needed was a tie to get into the final.”

Overall, Canyon finished 2-1-1 in the tournament.

Notes: Three Santa Clarita Valley teams will play for Hart Soccer Showcase championships today. The Golden Valley girls will play Pete Knight High for the Flight 2 title at 9 a.m., the Hart girls will face Quartz Hill at 11 a.m. for the Flight 1 championship and the Hart boys will take on Pete Knight at 1 p.m. for the boys title.
