Carol Hansen (stepmother), of Winnetka, and Debbie Westbrook (mother), of Castaic, are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter Nicole Colleen Smidt, of Santa Clarita, to Matthew Thomas Waschak, of Saugus.

The bride-elect was born in Van Nuys, and is a 2003 graduate of Valencia High School, and a 2007 graduate of University of California, Riverside with a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences. In November, she completed medical school at Ross University, and is set to begin residency in July  2012. She is the granddaughter of Fern Kolbe, of Encino.

The groom-elect is the son of Michael and Maria Waschak, of Saugus. He is the brother of Nicholas, Emma, Katelyn, Ian, Brian and Rosemary Waschak, of Saugus and the grandson of Robert and Lydia Waschak, of Saugus and Leland and Elaine Thomas, of Saugus.

The groom-elect is a 2003 graduate of Saugus High School and attended College of the Canyons where he earned his degree in fire technology. He is currently employed as a firefighter with the Los Angeles City Fire Department.

The couple met while working together at Six Flags Magic Mountain in the summer of 2005.

They became engaged on April 21, after the groom-elect led the bride-elect on a very special and unexpected Easter egg scavenger hunt.

The couple plan to be married on May 12 — the same date as the groom’s grandparents — at Bella Victorian Vineyards in Camarillo.
