Valencia High School will be the site of a West Coast Elite dance competition in January.

Some of the top schools in California will be on hand to open the 2012 season. Locally, teams from Hart, Saugus, Valencia and Golden Valley high schools will participate.

“This is a great opportunity to watch some very elite teams compete here in the Santa Clarita Valley,” Valencia adviser Michelle Brown said. “We’re very excited to be hosting an event of this caliber.”

Along with team routines, there will also be a solo competition.

“These young people are amazing dancers,” Valencia coach Trevor Lynskey said. “Most, if not all of them, have been performing since they were very young. It’s inspiring to see how talented and gifted they are.”

Local residents will be able to watch the national championship winning teams from Hart, Saugus and Valencia as they square off against each other. Saugus won three titles at the 2011 USA National competition. Hart also won a national title in the Character division, while Valencia took top honors with the coveted Grand National Championship.

The competition will be held on Jan. 21. Doors open at 7:30 a.m. and solo dances begin promptly at 8 a.m. Ticket prices are $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 6-10, and children younger` than 5 are free. Food and drinks will be available throughout the day.

Dancers and teams can register to compete at www.westcoastelitedance.com. The deadline to submit online forms is Dec. 24.
