First place

Joshua Hall

Grade 5

Live Oak Elementary School

My New Year’s goal is to get 200 AR points. Those are when you read a book, then take a test.

There is this snotty second-grader who is real happy because he has 160! He even yelled, “I have more AR points than you” out loud when I was going to the bathroom. It was so rude. I’m kind of hoping his mom sees this paper.

Also, I want to do better in math. When there is a hard question, I sit there and stare into space. Usually, I will daydream cool adventures, but no, just have to work my poop brain sometimes.

I have already told you too much. No more words enter this paper! Enjoy your New Year’s Eve.

Second place

Angel Cruz

Grade 5

Live Oak Elementary School

Wake up, it’s New Year’s Eve. For New Year’s Eve, me and my spectacular family don’t go to bed until 12 in the morning.

I always start thinking of goals to accomplish. I think I’m going to eat right, lose some weight because I’m fluffy, do some more yard work, pay attention more in school, do my homework and keep it in a spot where it does not get lost.

When my mom is done making some of her super, super, super, super, super, super, super duper pie, me and my brothers play some Xbox 360.

Last year, we played “Call of Duty: Black Ops,” but this year we might play “Grand Theft Auto.” Then I go take a hot but-not-too-hot, wet, moist shower, iron my clothes and watch some TV and movies.

Then when the time turns 12 o’ clock, we cheer “Happy New Year.” We eat some chocolate pie with marshmallows. Then I play some more video games and don’t go to sleep. Happy New Year!

Third place

Hailee Santiago

Grade 5

Live Oak Elementary School

Well, I would want to have responsibility to make sure that my family has a good, healthy life.

Now I just really want to help my brother with his homework every day. Well, as I’m getting older I will do so many things. I do so many chores, like dumping out the trash, reading, doing piano and feeding my pit bull dog every morning.

I hope my parents trust me even more to let me go around the block by myself.

Hailey Salvio

Grade 5

Live Oak Elementary School

For my New Year’s resolution, I want to learn my back tuck. To learn my back tuck, I need to be stronger and hold my legs in closer to my body. I need to not try to reach to the ground. I have to do a power hurdle round off back handspring punch into a back tuck. I’m still working on it on the trampoline and a triangle-shaped mat I call the Cheese. So, I’ll keep trying till I get my back tuck. That’s my New Year’s resolution.

Emma McCann

Grade 5

Live Oak Elementary School

The thing I want to accomplish is my artwork. I take art lessons and want to make the best picture ever. I still like the art I made, but I want to improve on it. When I go to my art class, I have lots of fun! I have made lots of different things, but most of my art is of animals.

My dad is really good at drawing. I hope to someday draw as good as him!

Vince Quintana

Grade 5

Live Oak Elementary School

My New Year’s resolution is to get better at skating. I can do some pretty good tricks on my scooter, but I want to get really good because I love skating. I do it almost every day.

There is this really fun skate park in Santa Clarita, but I don’t go there that much. I have seen very good skaters before. I always try and try, but never get any better.

Now I have a new scooter, an ultra pro scooter, and I’m doing a little better. I hope I get very good very soon.

Well, thanks for publishing me for the past two times, but I hope I get first place. Have a nice day.

Matthew David Ruiz

Grade 5

Live Oak Elementary School

My New Year’s resolution is to do better in school because I got suspended ’cause of this kid. Also, I got two referrals. I don’t want to try and do that again next year. So I’m going to try and listen in school and try not to get in trouble. So, that’s my New Year’s resolution.

Ryan Eberle

Grade 5

Live Oak Elementary School

My New Year’s resolution is to get better at video games. I want to get better because I kind of stink. Before, I always lost at a game. But now I am starting to get better. I hope I can get way better by next New Year’s.

The games I want to get better at are “Dungeon Defenders,” “Halo Reach,” “Call of Duty: Black Ops” and “Halo 3.” I hope to get better, and wish me luck.

Sam Card

Grade 5

Live Oak Elementary School

My New Year’s resolution is to be more so about things because I can have something to do after my homework besides watching TV and playing video games. That’s why I play with my dogs and cat. But if I get more creative, I can think of fun things to do.

Crystal Orozco

Grade 5

Live Oak Elementary School

For my New Year’s resolution, I want to be better in soccer. I will hopefully play every day with my sisters.

Like parents say, “practice makes perfect.” I am going to do positions that I don’t usually do, like goalie.

I will probably hopefully get a new soccer ball that is gray and black or black and green or blue. I also want to kick the soccer ball high in the air.

Dylan Santa Cruz

Grade 5

Live Oak Elementary School

My New Year’s resolution is to be more creative and to make more videos to post on the Internet.

Every New Year’s Eve, me and my family always have sparkling cider with 12 grapes to represent the 12 months. Each grape is supposed to be good luck for each month. My mom takes a luggage and goes in and out of the door 12 times. This depends on how many times she’s going to go on a vacation. I also have a friend come and stay over until midnight.

I like New Year’s Eve, because, when you think it’s the end, it’s just the beginning.

Robert Barajas

Grade 5

Live Oak Elementary School

My New Year’s resolution is to sign up for soccer, because it’s my favorite sport and my dad used to be a soccer player. He wasn’t famous though, he just played to entertain people. My uncle played on his team. My dad would play offense and my uncle would play defense.

Shay Hulin

Grade 5

Live Oak Elementary School

My New Year’s resolutions are to become a better artist and to finish my scrapbook, because my sister is the best artist in our family, and I want to be at least a little like her.

I also want to finish my scrapbook because I do not have any pictures of my sisters in it, or my mom, but I do have all the pictures of the people on my dad’s side of the family, like my brother, my dad and me.

Those are my two New Year’s resolutions, but you never know, you always can come up with a new one.

Anthony Galvez

Grade 5

Live Oak Elementary School

My New Year’s resolution is to read more books. I will read more books to raise my AR points.

My second resolution is to get better grades. I will do that by working harder in school, study and pay more attention.

My next resolution is to be more active and play outside, instead of playing video games. I will play soccer outside.

My final resolution is to do my chores. I will do my chores when I have free time.

Sonia Flores

Grade 5

Live Oak Elementary School

My New Year’s resolution is to be more helpful around the house. One way I will try is by helping my mom with making food for the holidays. I tried to help her when I was smaller, but she would say “no” because I could burn myself.

I also want to help with the chores more, like picking up after myself and my little brother.

I started helping with the cooking part on Thanksgiving when my mom and aunts made tamales.

Now I need to work extra hard on the chores, but I hope to be able to accomplish my resolutions this coming year.

Parker Brenes

Grade 5

Live Oak Elementary School

My New Year’s resolution is to pass fifth grade so I can become a different person and get smarter every minute. I also want to be better at math so I boost my grade.

My last resolution is to become a better friend and help people if they have been hurt.

Those are the changes that I wish to make happen. Happy almost New Year’s Day!

Alissandra Penaranda

Grade 5

Live Oak Elementary School

This year for New Year’s, my resolution is to boost my grades in school from a 3 to a 4. A 4 is the highest. We need 10 points each trimester, and I only have 9.4. I took many AR tests to get to that level.

A few days ago, we got to take a math test over again. So I studied, and I think I got a 4. I am so proud with what I did. I am going to try hard. And that’s my resolution for New Year’s.

Nonnie Howard

Grade 5

Live Oak Elementary School

My New Year’s resolution is: I want to improve my reading, so I’m going to try to read every day.

I want to improve my reading because I’m not very good at it. I am reading a good book, so that should help me out. Hope it works.

Alexa Ruelas

Grade 5

Live Oak Elementary School

My New Year’s resolution is to be a little friendlier to my brother. I always get mad at him, and I always call him names. But the reason I do that is because he’s pretty bossy and he even calls me names, so I want to show him how to be nice to me and I want to show myself how to be nice to him, but since he’s 22 I don’t think he would want to listen to me.

Actually, he never listens to me, only sometimes if it’s important.

I also want to learn how to cook. I’m going to tell my mom to show me how to cook. I think I’m old enough to learn how to cook, so next time it’s Thanksgiving or Christmas, I’ll be able to cook for my family.

Ivan Gonzalez

Grade 5

Live Oak Elementary School

My New Year’s resolution is to be better at “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3” because I suck and want to be on Level 47.

The other thing that I want to be better at is math because I don’t listen and I don’t get the work. The math is hard that I can’t divide three from twelve.

For “Modern Warfare 3,” I get the people who kill me, but I’m on Level 41 and can’t get promoted up a level.

The math, I’m doing good but not that good.

For “Modern Warfare 3,” I’m good at survival. I made it up to Wave 26. I hope I can get better at “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3” and math before New Year’s and I don’t like math.

That is why I don’t get math and I don’t like to do the work, but I like “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.”

That is why I’m getting good at it, and sometimes I like math and sometimes I get really good at it, and I like getting better at things like that stuff. Math is fun, but sometimes not.

Alan Montoya

Grade 5

Live Oak Elementary School

Dear Signal, this might not be your favorite story, but at least I tried my best. My New Year’s resolutions are to do better in fractions, and I like the barbecues my family has.

I do not care if I don’t get first place, but I hope I get second or third. But I really want first place, and I will keep writing to you so I can get the $5.

Eusebio Morales

Grade 5

Live Oak Elementary School

My New Year’s resolutions are to do my homework, get AR points and get good grades, because I barely have any AR points, and I don’t finish my homework sometimes.

And I’ll try to reach my goals so my parents are happy and so they won’t be mad at me for having bad grades.

Aleister D. Sayre

Grade 5

Live Oak Elementary School

My New Year’s resolution is to be and get better at eating more, drinking more and getting better at games. But my goal is to get better at science.

I want to become a scientist when I grow up and make games, potions and all of that fun stuff. I also want to learn karate, man.

That’s my New Year’s resolution. What’s yours? Bye, man.

Michael Campos

Grade 5

Live Oak Elementary School

My New Year’s resolution is to get the Air vs. Land Air Hogs helicopter/gun set, because it’s for two people in one set, and you get to knock the helicopter out of the sky.

Plus, my friend has it for himself. He got it for his birthday party. And that’s my New Year’s resolution.

Joshua Richard

Grade 5

Live Oak Elementary School

My New Year’s resolutions are to become better in reading and better in soccer. Well, first I think I need to start reading because I hate to read, and it sometimes starts to get boring. That’s why I didn’t read. But now I’m going to improve on reading.

My second thing is soccer. We just won the championship, but I think I can improve more when we go to other teams in the state and compete with them. I can improve on my goalie skills and my dribbling, too.

I need to improve. My reading and soccer skills, I can improve on.

Pamela Razalan

Grade 5

Live Oak Elementary School

My New Year’s goals are to improve my grades and do well in school. I also want to accomplish a lot of stuff, like finish my drawing book by drawing, of course, leveling up my AR points and doing really good on tests. That’s what I want to do to read my goals.

Sandra Vega

Grade 5

Live Oak Elementary School

My New Year’s resolution is to get more AR points before the end of the trimester.

This trimester, I have to get 20 AR points. I only have 10.2, so I have to get those 10 more points before the trimest is over.

My other New Year’s resolution is to read better. At my conference, my teacher said that I need to improve on my reading a little bit. I want to read better, so everyone can understand what I’m saying.

Christopher Kariuki

Grade 5

Live Oak Elementary School

Hello, my name is Christopher, but everyone calls me Chris, and I have tons of goals I’d like to accomplish. I’ll only have time to tell you three of my targets, so here they are.

First is my book report I have to do. The book should be finished by Jan. 23 and report due by Feb. 7. The title of the book is “Chasing Vermer.” It is 254 pages, and I barely understand the first 6 pages. I hope I can be done this year because if I read 11 pages a day, I’ll be done in 23 days.

Second is making friends. I’m normally a lonely person at school. All I do is walk all over the school, or do nothing. It would be nice to have a couple of friends because everyone hates me for no reason. So, that would be nice to change.

Last is a story I’m writing. I’m kind of lazy, so I really don’t do it, but I try. It would be nice, so I try. Also, I’m not telling what it’s about.

Well, thanks for listening. My name is Chris, so thank you.
