Vino 100 is working with the Hunger Defense Fund on a monthlong food drive to feed the hungry.

People can drop off non-perishable food donations in a collection boxes at Vino 100, 28112 Newhall Ranch Road until Nov. 29. Local Hunger Defense Fund volunteers will distribute the food to needy SCV families. The defense fund is a nonprofit humanitarian relief organization.

"We've seen a 52 percent increase in need this year as compared to last year," said Wendi Lancy, Hunger Defense Fund director. She summed up the factor contributing to increased need in two words.

"The economy," Lancy said.

There is more than one way to give food to those in need, Lancy said. In lieu of food donations those who want to lend a helping hand can participate in Vino's "10 for 10" program, Lancy said. Participants can give monetary donations, which will go directly to the Hunger Defense Fund, she said. Customers get a 10 percent discount on purchases made the day of their donation. The discount excludes special events.

Vino 100 will host a special event benefiting the Hunger Defense Fund from 2 to 5 p.m. on Nov. 23. Ten percent of all store sales during the event will be donated to the nonprofit organization.

"We really appreciate that Vino 100 is doing this for us right now," Lancy said.

The fund receives no government funding and operates on a slim 1 percent margin. Ninety-nine cents of every dollar goes toward programs and stays in the Santa Clarita Valley.

Many families and seniors don't have to look any further than the dinner table to know times are tough, Lancy said. Call (661) 299-9273 or visit www.hungerdefensefund.org for more information.
