No, it's not a mistake.

Many of you have seen my name at the top of this very page for the second day and have read my byline as "Signal Sports Editor."

It's true, kind of.

I relinquished this very position April 30 and have turned up here and there as an occasional writer.

My departure was purely my choice.

I wanted to travel and help my family during a trying time. Honestly, though, I was frustrated with the direction of this paper.

But understanding that this sports page, once my biggest passion, had seen its struggles of late, prompted me to offer some help.

So thanks to the vision and foresight of The Signal's new publisher Ian Lamont and editor Lila Littlejohn, they've allowed me to help The Signal's sports department on an interim basis.

I am here to help mentor a young staff full of potential.

I am here to help them embrace the history of this valley and its rich tradition of sports.

And ultimately, I am here to help the tradition of excellence - which started years ago and flourished under my mentors Grant Gordon and Grant Parpan - continue under the next sports editor.

I will be here for just a short period of time, but I'm hoping we will once again thrive.

In the next coming weeks, we will restore what was, try out some different things and hopefully please our readers.

We will be fair and balanced.

Please understand, with a staff of four, we can not cover every single team in this valley on a given day. But we will definitely try to cover as much as possible.

Hopefully, you will embrace us once again.

So if you see one of our staff writers at a game, please be confident that they will give you their best.

Many thanks to Bruce Bourquin and Greg Eichelberger for giving great effort during a very difficult period in this paper's sports history.

Like the phoenix, we rise again.

Cary Osborne is the Signal's Sports Editor on an interim basis. His column reflects his own views, not necessarily those of The Signal. He can be reached at cosborne@the-signal.com.
