Parents-to-be Christina and Jason Bobby, of Valencia, tag necessary items for their baby registry at Babies "R" Us Saturday afternoon during the Canyon Country store's opening day.

Heavy rain and thunder did not stop anxious parents from taking advantage of the Babies "R" Us opening day on Saturday.

"We're happy we don't have to drive out to Panorama City or Simi Valley," said avid Babies "R" Us shopper, Ingeborg Vera, 34, of Valencia.

The aisles and checkouts were bustling with moms and dads holding toddlers in one arm and tot toys in another.

"Apparently everyone from Santa Clarita came," said Robert Bean, a Saugus father of a six-week-old newborn. "It was nice, clean and easy to find what we needed. It's what you'd expect to see in Santa Clarita," he said.

"This is not quite what we were expecting with the current economy," said store manager Devin Fisher, referring to the crowd that filled the store. "We're really happy to be involved in this community and we've already received wonderful reception."

In addition to providing community members a local baby retailer, Babies "R" Us provided 40 job positions. Santa Clarita, Palmdale or Sylmar citizens filled 39 of those, Fisher said.

"I couldn't be more proud of the folks we have," Fisher said. "They're eager to help the community and serve the guests."
