Local business owners and company representatives listen to a presentation at a vendor outreach program at the Santa Clarita City Hall on Friday.

More than 30 business owners and company representatives attended a one-hour “how to do business with the city” vendor outreach program at the Santa Clarita City Hall Friday.

Business owners learned how to register their company with the city, how to compete for quotes, bids and proposals.

The city also described its “10 percent local preference” program for Santa Clarita-based companies. Often cities have to go with the lowest bidder, said Jessica Jackson, communications specialist with the city of Santa Clarita. The program, depending on the scope of the project, allows a local company who comes within 10 percent of the lowest bid to match the lower price and win the bid.

“We’re trying to keep the work and the contracts local whenever we can,” Jackson said.

The goal of the outreach program is to increase participation in the city’s procurement process by making it as simple as possible for businesses to do so, she said.

Close to two dozen companies attended the city’s business outreach seminar.

“The city will host another session in 2012 for anyone who missed today’s program,” Jackson said.”
