Jim Rollins and Lois-Jeanne Danis ask City Council candidates questions at the Senior Center debate Wednesday.

With the Santa Clarita City Council election less than six weeks away, candidates' discussion forums and debates have intensified. The most recent candidates' forum took place at the Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center on Wednesday afternoon, with nearly 75 concerned seniors attending to hear what the candidates had to say about their visions for the valley if they are elected on April 8.

"I'm working with Diane Trautman, so I just wanted to come out and see how she does against the other candidates," said Mary Fuchsman of Newhall.

While Fuchsman was actively involved with one campaign, others came to the forum because of their long-term residence in the Santa Clarita Valley and concern regarding the city's progress.

"I really wanted to hear about their visions for the community," said Mary Jane Hartman of Canyon Country, who has lived in the SCV since 1970. "I've seen this city change and get more congested, so I really care about what city council does and what these candidates plan to do."

A few seniors came to hear about specific issues, but were disappointed to learn that those issues would not be discussed.

"I wanted to talk about the local Department of Motor Vehicles," said Jeanene Grigsby of Canyon Country, who attended with husband Rick, who added that he hoped to hear the candidates talk about the Veteran's Memorial Park in Newhall.
