Have Some Backbone

To The Editor:

It was amazing. At 6:30 on Tuesday morning, it was the sound of hysterical laughter as community members in Castaic read the Tuesday edition of the paper. The Hart School Board is going to do a survey to see if Castaic needs a new school or if another school might need a performing arts center.

Let's spend $45,000 to see which is more important. I have an idea. ... Let's build a performing arts center and put the students from Castaic in it (so they will have their own seat at school). And we could divide up the center and make it similar to a one-room school house for the Castaic kids. They won't mind; they don't really have a school anyway. This will be a place to call home.

Come on, Hart district! Are you daft? Do what is right. Earmark the proper amount of money for a Castaic High School and spend the leftover money for improvements elsewhere. To me this is a no-brainer. What was the old Nike ad? "Just Do It!" Then you can think about adding more bond money to fund necessary improvements.

Castaic has waited patiently for years for the go-ahead on the high school. It saddens me to no end to think that my own kids and my fifth-grade Girl Scouts will not have their own high school to attend. They don't even know that this fate is awaiting them.

It is our turn. We have waited patiently while other schools have been expeditiously built and populated and subsequently overcrowded with our kids. I am sure that West Ranch and Valencia high schools want us to have a high school as badly as we do.

Come to our community and get our input on school sites. We will not charge you any money for this, and I am sure that the community will turn out in full force. We don't want to wait any longer for a school. We don't want to spend our limited funds on unnecessary expenditures.

Stop spending our money! Show a fiscal backbone, buy the land necessary for the school and build it!
