Angela Bass, 41, was driving a Chevrolet on northbound Highway 14 near Sand Canyon Road around 12:15 a.m. when her vehicle veered in lanes, hit the center divider and subsequently went off the side of the freeway into a steep, sloping dirt embankment. According to CHP officers, Bass was allegedly driving under the influence at the time of the incident, though her blood alcohol level was not released.
Bass was booked on a felony charge of driving under the influence and felony child endangerment.
Before going off the side of the freeway, Bass nearly hit two Newhall-area California Highway Patrol officers who were on the right shoulder helping a disabled motorist. Both officers witnessed the entire collision. No other vehicles or individuals were involved.
Bass was reportedly not wearing her seatbelt, and suffered moderate injuries. Both she and the boy were transported to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital.
The child seat, which was in the rear right passenger seat and not secured, was jarred in the crash. The child, still in his seat, hit his head on the back of the front right passenger seat. His condition was not available late Thursday afternoon.
