In an effort to support small businesses, FedEx has given $1 million to consumers to spend in locally owned independent businesses in Santa Clarita on Small Business Saturday on Nov. 26.

American Express began Small Business Saturday in 2010 as a way to support local businesses the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

American Express cardholders who register their card and then shop at a small business on Small Business Saturday receive a $25 American Express gift card.

Joining the campaign is Vino 100 of Valencia. The boutique-wine tasting and wine retailer is also planning a special holiday offer by giving a $5 gift certificate for every $25 spent in Vino 100 gift certificates.

Vino 100’s holiday special runs Nov. 26 through December 31.

Also participating in Small Business Saturday are Brent’s Carpet One of Newhall, Consumers Furniture in Santa Clarita, Green Thumb Garden Center in Newhall, Santa Clarita Tattoo & Body Piercing in Valencia and Extreme Audio Creations.

Genuine Cigars on Town Center Drive in Valencia is also offering specials on Dec. 2. Customers receive 20 percent off a mix-and-match box of cigars plus 10 free cigars and a buy two, get one free special.

 Jump in sales

Small retailers that accept American Express cards saw a 28 percent increase in sales on that day in 2010 compared with the previous year.

As a sponsor of this year’s event, FedEx handed out gift cards to FedEx customers and on Facebook to 30,000 consumers. FedEx will give 10,000 more gift cards directly to FedEx customers.

“A vibrant small-business community is critical to the health of the U.S. economy,” said T. Michael Glenn, FedEx’s executive vice president of market development.

FedEx also has free promotional tools on its Facebook page that local businesses can use to promote the Small Business Saturday at www.facebook.com/fedex.
