There are 317 runners who all have the same opportunity Sunday in the Santa Clarita Marathon in Valencia.

The chance is big - qualify for this year's Boston Marathon.

The starting line is between the Hyatt hotel and Westfield Town Center under the paseo bridge, which will be next to the Greens restaurant.

Whoever crosses the tape at the finish line will run across Theater Drive outside Buca di Beppo Italian restaurant, near Valencia Town Center.

City of Santa Clarita Arts and Events supervisor Pat Downing said there will no changes to the 26.2-mile course this year to the marathon, which is in its 13th year.

"It'll be the same as last year," Downing said. "Last year, ten percent qualified for the Boston Marathon. It goes by time and age group. We won't know how many qualify until they finish."

There will be a 13.1-mile half-marathon, a 3.1-mile 5K run and the Kid K .27-mile romp. The children's run is 1 to 12 years old.

"We've seen incredible growth," Downing said.

Last year, Jose Ortiz Pina from Gardena won the men's marathon with a time of 2 hours, 35.18 minutes. Chuck Teixeira of Canyon Country (2:52.24) finished second and Roberto Leonardo (2:52.25) out of Lancaster came in third.

Helayne Lehman won the women's marathon (3:14.50). Melyndee Butterfield was the fastest runner who lived in Santa Clarita (3:36.31), coming in seventh overall.

There will be runners from 15 states and six countries this year. The marathon is sponsored by Parkway Motorcars.

The first loop of the course runs from near Town Center Drive and McBean Parkway out past College of the Canyons on Valencia Boulevard, along Tourney Road and onto McBean.

The second and third loops run toward Copper Hill Drive and back onto McBean, then onto Wiley Canyon Road and back to Valencia.

The final loop follows Soledad Canyon Road to the soccer arena, back past Bridgeport Community Park, touching McBean back onto the south fork, pulling off on the bridge over Creekside Drive and ending at the mall on Theater Drive.
