The West Ranch girls tennis team continued its dominant season with a 16-2 victory over Righetti High in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division III playoffs at West Ranch High on Thursday.

The Wildcats (16-0) are coming off an undefeated regular season in which they won the Foothill League outright for the first time and entered the playoffs as the No. 1 overall seed in the division.

"I tell the girls, if you are the No. 1 seed and you play Wimbledon, Roger Federer or (Rafael) Nadal don’t go to Wimbledon without the goal of winning it all," said West Ranch head coach Eric Spiecker. "If we’re the No. 1 seed, we have to have the goal of winning CIF. But that means every match is a step. If you don’t have the goal of winning it, that’s insane."

And if Thursday’s match was any indication, the Wildcats appear to be peaking at the right time.

The victory over the Warriors, who were coming off an 11-4 victory over Whitney that was called early due to darkness, means the Wildcats advance to play either Rancho Cucamonga or Santiago of Corona on Saturday afternoon in the second round.

On Thursday, the familiar faces were on full display for the Wildcats early on, as No. 1 singles player Ana Cecilia Fuentes swept two sets 6-0, 6-0 to start the match.

West Ranch’s No. 2 doubles team of Gabrielle Morici and Lena Poonnopatam did the same for the doubles side, sweeping two sets 6-2, 6-0 to help the Wildcats sweep all nine doubles sets.

But it wasn’t just the top players who came through for the Wildcats against Righetti (12-7).

The No. 3 team of Amanda Wilkinson and Sarah Andrews swept three sets 6-2, 6-3, 6-1.

No. 2 singles player Julia Lynch picked up two sets 6-1, 6-1, and dropped a third set to Righetti No. 1 singles player Annette Sousa 7-5, while West Ranch No. 3 singles player Anne DeGiorgio won two sets 6-2, 6-2.

And the No. 2 doubles team of Jordyn Jaffe and MacKenzie Lyle won one set 7-5 over the Righetti No. 1 team of Chanel Yamaguchi and Gabi Pereverziev and 6-1 over Righetti No. 2 Tiana McMann and Sierra Carlberg.

"I think our girls played really well," Spiecker said. "I thought (Righetti) was a really good team ... They have a lot of quality players."

The Wildcats will try to keep up the momentum on Saturday, as they try to get one step closer to winning the program’s first CIF championship.
