A firefighter works on a fire in the Valencia building where The Greens Sports Bar and Restaurant was formerly located.

Fire gutted the ground floor of the vacant Greens restaurant on McBean Parkway near Valencia Boulevard Sunday afternoon.

At about 5 p.m., flames and heavy black smoke were spotted coming from the restaurant, which has been closed for business for at least a few months.

“It was a fully involved fire when we arrived,” said Capt. Mark Savage of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

The fire cost a million dollars in structural damage and another $250,000 of damage to the contents of the buildings.

“There were flames coming out of several windows.” he said.

More than 40 firefighters arrived at the blaze.

A search was done for occupants, Savage said, adding: “The search for anyone inside was negative.”

Within 35 minutes, the fire was knocked down.

“It was pretty much well-involved,” said another firefighter. “Fire was coming out of every window all the way around the building, with flames shooting out the windows.”

No one was hurt in the blaze, which drew more than a half-dozen fire trucks and stopped westbound traffic on McBean.

Rerouted traffic cut through the parking lot of the Westfield Valencia Town Center mall.

“The cause of the fire is under investigation,” Savage said.
