After giving up a couple of big plays defensively in a loss to Hart last week, Valencia’s defense took it as point of pride to avoid doing it again.

It turned out Valencia’s defense was the one making plays during a 35-8 win over Golden Valley on Friday night at Valencia High School.

“We knew we needed a redemption game,” said Valencia linebacker Ryan Gorman. “We knew we needed to come out here and prove that we’re back on top.”

Thanks to scoring two defensive touchdowns, the Vikings (5-4, 3-1 Foothill League) reached their highest point total of the season and did so by the end of the third quarter.

That led to a running clock throughout the fourth.

Gorman scored one of those two touchdowns on defense when he picked off Golden Valley quarterback Reid Soliman before bulldozing his way to a 38-yard score.

At that point, the Vikings led 21-0 with 2:45 left in the second quarter.

Before that, Valencia quarterback Sean Murphy scored on a 1-yard keeper on the last play of the first quarter and running back Cody Anciano added a 1-yard touchdown run midway through the second.

Murphy ended up 14-for-20 with 133 yards passing and a 33-yard scoring strike to Hayden White in the third quarter.

Golden Valley (1-8, 0-4) finished the game with 87 yards, most of which came on the final drive of the game.

The Grizzlies scored on a 25-yard halfback pass delivered by Earl Johnson to Isa Bey with less than a minute remaining.

Johnson, who came into the game as one of the league’s top rushers, finished with 24 yards on 16 carries.

“Their defensive line and their linebacking corps is the best we’ve seen this year,” said Grizzlies head coach Robert Fisher.
